Hilton Metropole for Penguin Events & Theo Paphitis

This was a truly special event for a truly special client! Amber Pickering, senior project manager  from Penguin events, contacted us with just 2 weeks before the event was taking place. The brief was ‘The Greatest Show’ and they wanted circus to help lift the event, with a morning interactive walkabout session and then a very special entrance for the main guest of honour.

After an initial consultation with Amber and the production manager, Max, we decided that we wanted to really elevate the circus theme and take it to a more avant garde and editorial look. Among the important variables, the overall look and aesthetic was a huge part in making sure this had the impact needed for guests to be wowed by our presence.

With such a short amount of time, director Zaq Andel worked tirelessly on six new costume designs, which the incredible Rhi Matthews brought to life in an astounding 12 days. The result was a whimsical and vibrant display of whacky circus wonder, which Amber and the client, TPRG, were thrilled with!

An array of artists were brought in, including Cirque du Soleil clown Lee Thompson, Esther Fuge on cyr wheel, Lee Partridge for unicycle, Doreen Grossman with juggling, Simeon Kiola on acrobatic stilts, and Rachel Boxley sported the ingenious carousel dress on her roller skates. Alongside them, accompanied two stilt walkers provided by the client, who enjoyed being directed and brought in to the CircusMASH aesthetic. It was long time performer Simeon who explained to them, “Zaq doesn’t live in our traditional performing world, he doesn’t come from performing in clubs. He lives in a surreal world of artistic splendor!” And thus, we began exploring each character, each skill and how we would bring to life this event through circus and art.

So who was this special guest, you ask? None other than Dragon Den original, business tycoon Theo Paphitis! We rehearsed overnight and created an astounding entrance that ensure everyone wouldn’t be able to take their eyes off of us and Theo. Hosted by the Birmingham Hilton Metropole hotel, we were spoilt by the hotel and free to bring our special brand of circus mayhem through the halls, conference rooms, reception and main event room, and it went down a treat! Delegates were bewildered, bemused and fixated on the array of visually sumptuous costumes, matched with incredibly high circus skill.

This, for us, has been perhaps one of our most enjoyable event. We love when clients give us artistic freedom and trust in our ability to adapt and perform in an ever-changing environment. To say Amber was impressed with us really just doesn’t express her gratitude, however her immediate response to wanting to work together again in the near future is more than we could hope for. She said, “my director and team thought the selection of entertainers were incredible.. I cannot thank you enough for working with us so hard, and such last minute. I am looking forward to working with you again, thank you again you are amazing!”

We had a wonderful time, thank you for having us indeed. We look forward to working together again…
