The Birmingham Youth Circus is Brum’s youth performance troupe which is facilitated by CircusMASH in partnership with circus schools and studios across the city. It is a 12-month programme that runs from September to August and culminates in a large-scale performance that will tour in July & August through the region.
The BYC opens young minds to circus career education, innovation, entrepreneurship training and a deeper understanding of circus as an art form so when young people become of age, they can make informed decisions of whether to take a step into a career in circus arts. Circus is a thriving industry from which producers, directors, choreographers, designers and creatives are innovating and constantly evolving what circus is.

We find youth work harder without their parents around, especially with some of the scary things that we ask them to do. We like to help them understand fear, and why our brain sometimes makes us not want to try things. With parents around their safety net makes them run away from what they might be scared of.
You know your children better than us, if you are worried, you are absolutely welcome to stay but we ask that you allow them to settle with you there so you feel comfortable that they are ok… and then allow us to help them understand how to overcome every fear that they will ever have.
We have a space access policy in place in all youth sessions. The door has a code lock on and the space will be locked during youth class times. There will be a window of 10 minutes either side of the start and finish of each class in which the door will be opened. Late comers will not be admitted. If you need to contact the space directly during class the direct number is 0121 439 2530 and select option 9.
Parents will not be admitted back into the space until 10 minutes before the end of their child’s class.
What Aerial Level is my child?
If your child is new to circus we ask you to come along to a Level 1 class and from this we can let you know what class would be suitable. If your child has had extensive experience in aerial please email firstname.lastname@example.org and tell us a little about their training and we can tell you what class would be appropriate.
I don’t know what type of CircusMASH class to bring my child along to? What would be best for them.
In our Saturday Recreation class, youth get to try a little bit of everything through play. They can see what they connect with and we can talk to you after class about what other classes may be suitable.
I want my child to come along to MASH STEP but we do can’t a weekly class.
Unfortunately we are unable to allow a place on MASH STEP unless you are able to attend a weekly class. MASH STEP is all about learning to perform and if youth do not attend a week class they will not build the necessary technique skills that they need to be able to perform. Technique is not taught on MASH STEP. It’s all about creating performance.
